Well gang,
As of this week Neighborhood Watch returns with "The Quota" Part 12. Hope everyone enjoys it. I'm hard at work on episode 13 and 14 now. I'm glad to say this storyline is going to ramp up with issue 13 and begin moving quickly toward the conclusion. I'm excited about these next couple of books because we get a mess of new villains introduced that will cause all kinds of trouble for Ray and the Doc. I hope it will be worth the waiting.
Squash- glad to hear from you after so long. I always enjoy your comments and encouragement. Did you get to read episode 11 yet? I thought you might enjoy some of Ray's "visions" in that issue. Just some hints to the greater story with him.
Looks like we finally got the spam under control. Unfortunately, that means all comments will be moderated before they get posted. I hope that doesn't dissuade anyone from posting though, I always love to read any comments.
Take care all,
Doc |

Whoops!
I didn't realise there were still pages to go after 19, so here's the rest of the review:
Loved pgae 20. I was hoping I would see more of the look that you were trying to achieve of the previous page. As I said, it looks clean and dramatic. The perfect combination for an action scene.
Despite what I said about the heavy use of sound effects, Your choice to use it for diegetic speach was a good one. That conveys exactly what it is meant to: pain. I applaud this visual direction. Stick to it. You've also managed to use the in-game inspirations really well in that last panel. If you're going to keep using CoX has your canvas and brush, I would seriously recommend playing around with them as much as possible.
It nice to see some more creative panel work for the conclusion of Ray's fight with Sista Sledgehammer. I especially liked the star shaped panel that had a hue that reminded me of sepia and nightvision mixed together. Since you're somewhat limited in what can be achieved due to your use on CoX, I think layout is where you're really going to leave your creative mark. What your doing with panel placement is really eyecatching and is surprisingly driving in regards to the narrative.
I love the direction you're going with The Doc'. He's slowly going from morally ambiguous to downright viscious. As I've said previously, I'm loving him more as a character than Ray, I think. I'm not sure if it was intentional, but your choice to make a noticable size difference in the panels depicting Ray and the Doctor's responses works well. It helped cement that Doc Midnight considers himself as the means to an end, with his moral standard as an unquestionable absolute. The tiny panels that Ray is housed in really communicate the futility of his trying to question Doc's methods, and his (previously) unwavering commitment to someone who has portrayed themselves as an ideal more than a man.
The last page works well as a dénouement and it shows good attention to detail that you avoided putting all the Janes in the same unconcious position. I'm compelled to know more about this "Spider King" so feed me more! |

Heya Doc!
Your contribution to CCC #3 was excellent. With every issue you produce, you seem to be getting more and more proficient at making each page striking and stylistically distinctive. I love the jaunty angles you use when constructing your panel layout, like in page 14. I usually wouldn't be a fan of so much unused "white space", but what you're doing more than compensates for it.
Your closing page, 19, also ranks up there with the teaser image you did way back for The Neighborhood Watch #8. It's not the first time I seen that techinque (those awesome circles) used in this medium, but you've grasped it perfectly. It's clean, uncluttered and dripping with action. Choosing to have the gun-toting Jane's head highlighted was a smart move. Especially with the red colour-over.
My only criticism is the very high usage of large text for sound effects. I've never been a fan of it anyway, so my opinion is already a little biased. I just feel that too much of it can clutter a page, and reduce the realism of your writing, which I cannot praise enough. Plus, it's all to easy to forget that some splash words are simply not onomatopoeias, such as "SlllAM!!!"
I'm still smitten with this issue. I'm used to enjoying your more text heavy, story driven work, so this was a refreshing change of pace. It's nice to see that you're able to be diverse in your approach to TNW.
Good work Doctor!

Well, it's been a few months, but I'm glad to say that I've been hard at work on some new NW installments.
The second part of "Enter the One-Eyed Janes" is available in the City of Comic Creators Compendium #3 at www.cohcomicindex.com. The first part of this story can also be found at this site in the CCC Compendium #2.
I've also finished Part 12 of "The Quota." I plan to release it next week, likely on Wednesday.
I've also finished the scripts for Quota 13 and 14, and am in the midst of shooting right now.
So, plenty of NW goodness is out and available and coming soon. Looks like The Quota is gonna wrap up with about 16 total parts.
Check back next week for a big update! |

Matt,
I just ran across Neighborhood Watch today while lurking in the CoH forums. I was expecting another lame piece of fan fiction, but halfway into Issue 1 I realized, "This is actually a good comic book!".
Thank you for making this publicly available, I look forward to reading all past and future issues. |
